Farmaajo demands probe into death of detained officer Sheegow Ahmed

Tuesday April 8, 2025

Mogadishu (HOL) — Former Somali President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo has called for a transparent and thorough investigation into the death of Sheegow Ahmed Ali, a former military officer who died Monday while in government custody.

In a statement issued Monday night, Farmaajo urged the current administration to take the concerns of Sheegow's family and the relatives of the young men detained alongside him seriously.

"It is important to conduct an immediate investigation into the circumstances of the deceased's death," Farmaajo said, extending his condolences to Sheegow's family and the Somali nation, and praying for patience and strength for his loved ones.

Sheegow, who had been in custody since late 2023, was serving a 10-year sentence handed down by a military court following clashes between his forces and government troops in Mogadishu last August. He died Monday night at Digfeer Hospital in Mogadishu.

Health Minister Dr. Ali Haaji Aden confirmed that Sheegow had been receiving treatment for liver failure and had tested positive for Hepatitis B. He urged the public to remain calm and avoid politicizing the matter.

Officials from the Jareerweyne clan and Sheegow's family dismissed circulating rumors that he had been poisoned, calling them baseless and harmful.

"We are satisfied with the medical report from Digfeer Hospital and urge others not to create unnecessary confusion," said Minister Dahabo Suusow, a relative of the deceased.

Sheegow, who previously served as a commander in Bariirre, Lower Shabelle, had a long military history and had spoken publicly about resisting al-Shabaab attacks, including a 2017 assault that left 18 militants dead.
