Mogadishu (HOL)  — Ukraine and Somalia formally established diplomatic relations on Friday during the Antalya Diplomatic Forum in Turkey, signalling a new chapter in Kyiv’s efforts to expand ties across the African continent.

Ukrainian Deputy Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha and Somalia’s State Minister for Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Ali Mohamed Omar, signed the agreement on the sidelines of the high-level diplomatic summit.

“Today, we officially established diplomatic relations with Somalia,” Sybiha announced on X. “We appreciate Somalia’s support for Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.”

The move comes as Ukraine seeks to deepen engagement with African nations amid ongoing geopolitical competition with Russia. Somalia has voiced consistent support for Ukraine’s territorial integrity at international forums.

In return, Ukraine has extended humanitarian assistance to Somalia through its “Grain from Ukraine” initiative to mitigate food insecurity in drought-affected regions. In 2022, Kyiv allocated 50,000 tons of wheat to Somalia and Ethiopia as part of the aid effort.

The Antalya Diplomatic Forum—organized by Turkey’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and held under the patronage of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan—gathers heads of state, diplomats, and civil society leaders for discussions on global peace and cooperation. This year’s event brought together over 70 foreign ministers and representatives from more than 60 international organizations.
