Nairobi (HOL) – Police in Isiolo have launched a manhunt for
three gunmen who shot and injured Idle Hassan, Secretary General of the Isiolo
Somali Council of Elders, on Thursday evening outside Jamia Mosque.
According to witnesses, the assailants—riding a motorcycle
with concealed number plates—blocked Hassan’s path as he arrived for evening
prayers around 8 p.m. One of them opened fire before the trio sped away.
Hassan, who was recently advocating for dialogue among
Isiolo leaders following a divisive impeachment row between the county
executive and Members of the County Assembly (MCAs), was rushed to a hospital
in Meru, where he is recovering.
The family condemned what they described as a second attempt
on his life and urged police to ensure their safety and bring the attackers to
justice.
In June, Isiolo MCAs voted to impeach Governor Abdi Guyo,
but the Senate overturned the decision and called on the governor to reconcile
with other leaders.
