Mogadishu (HOL) — Somalia’s immigration chief met with
senior U.S. diplomats in Mogadishu on Sunday to discuss strengthening border
controls, improving passport services, and expanding joint security
initiatives.
Mustafe Sheekh Ali Duhulow, director of the Somali
Immigration and Citizenship Authority, held talks with U.S. Ambassador to
Somalia Richard Hiley and Matthew Younger, head of the embassy’s political and
economic affairs section.
The meeting focused on cooperation in border security
management, recognition of the Somali passport, and the rollout of the new
U.S.-supported PISCES border control system. Officials also discussed
integrating passport services between the Immigration Authority and the
National Identification and Registration Authority (NIRA).
Capacity-building programs to train and equip Somali
immigration personnel were also on the agenda, according to Somali officials.
In a statement on X, formerly Twitter, the U.S. Embassy
described the meeting as “very productive” and reaffirmed Washington’s
commitment to enhancing Somalia’s border security.
“We very much appreciate our valuable relationship with DG
Dhuholow and the Federal Government of Somalia on this important issue. For
every nation, border security is national security. In Somalia, border security
is also a key element in the fight against al-Shabaab/al Qaeda and ISIS,” the
embassy posted.
The talks come amid heightened regional security concerns,
with Somali authorities seeking greater international support to counter
cross-border threats and criminal networks.
