Somalia Cabinet approves cybercrime bill to boost digital security

Friday August 22, 2025

Mogadishu (HOL) — Somalia’s Cabinet on Thursday approved a new Cybercrime Bill aimed at strengthening the country’s digital security and combating online crime, officials said.

The legislation, presented by the Minister of Communications and Technology, seeks to protect computer systems and networks, prevent illegal use of technology and enable the investigation and prosecution of cyber offenses.

Officials said the bill also lays the foundation for law enforcement to hold perpetrators accountable, safeguard critical infrastructure and protect the national economy.

The move underscores the government’s push to address emerging digital threats alongside conventional security challenges.

During the weekly session chaired by Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre, ministers also reviewed reports on ongoing military operations against extremist groups and praised Somali forces for recent gains.
