Mogadishu (HOL) — Somalia’s federal cabinet has approved the formation of a 15-member National Higher Education Committee tasked with overhauling oversight and governance in the country’s university system, the Ministry of Education announced Wednesday.
The committee was established during the Council of Ministers’ weekly meeting chaired by Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre, following a proposal from the Ministry of Education, Culture, and Higher Education. It is mandated to lead, supervise, and reform post-secondary institutions in line with national education policy and standards.
“This is a turning point in Somalia’s effort to standardize and improve the quality of higher education across the country,” the ministry said in a statement. “We prioritized academic expertise, leadership experience, and transparency throughout the selection process.”
The committee operates under Somalia’s Higher Education Act No. 30, which came into effect in December 2024. According to the ministry, the selection process involved multiple vetting stages guided by legal benchmarks and academic standards. The committee members include professors, researchers, and seasoned administrators representing diverse fields of expertise.
