    Mogadishu (HOL) — Police in Somalia’s Banadir region have arrested five individuals accused of staging and circulating a fake video that falsely portrayed an undercover officer robbing a street ice cream vendor, in what authorities say was an attempt to undermine public trust in national security forces.

    The video, which spread widely across Somali social media platforms on Sunday, triggered widespread outrage before police confirmed it was fabricated.

    “A rapid investigation confirmed the video was staged to damage the credibility of security forces and mislead the public,” the Banadir Police Command said in a statement. “The suspects have been arrested and will be brought before a competent court.”

    Authorities said the individuals behind the video were apprehended shortly after it surfaced and face criminal charges under Somali law. Officials have not yet released their identities.

    The police urged citizens to verify information before sharing it online, warning that the spread of false or manipulated content could jeopardize national security and social cohesion.

    Security agencies also stated that anyone found involved in the creation, recording, or distribution of such fabricated content would face legal consequences.
