Somaliland issues coastal alert over strong winds and extreme heat

Monday June 2, 2025

Hargeisa (HOL) — Somaliland’s Coast Guard has warned of high winds and dangerous sea conditions expected to affect parts of the Gulf of Aden coastline, urging fishermen, tourists, and coastal residents to avoid unnecessary exposure as the region experiences soaring temperatures and rough waters.

The alert, issued Monday, highlights worsening maritime conditions with wind speeds expected to range between 14 km/h and 45 km/h. Waves could rise as high as 1.9 meters, creating hazardous conditions for small boats and maritime activity.

“This is a caution to all maritime users—including fishing crews and tourists—to remain vigilant as winds intensify and sea conditions deteriorate across several parts of our coastline,” the Coast Guard said in an official statement.

Meteorological data also shows eastern coastal regions could experience temperatures between 32°C and 41°C amid reports that 2025 is shaping up to be one of the hottest years on record in Somaliland. Towns and inland areas have also recorded above-average temperatures compared to recent years.

Authorities warned that the combination of heat and wind could heighten health and transportation risks. The Coast Guard advised residents to follow official updates, avoid sea travel unless necessary, and take heat precautions, especially in vulnerable coastal communities.

Officials say they are monitoring the weather system and will issue additional advisories as needed.
