Mogadishu (HOL) - U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM) said it
carried out an airstrike against Islamic State (ISIS) fighters in Somalia’s
Puntland regional state.
In a statement released on Monday, AFRICOM said the strike
targeted ISIS militants about 37 miles (60 kilometers) from the port city of
Bosaso, on the Gulf of Aden.
The command did not provide additional details about the
operation, including casualty figures or the extent of the damage.
U.S. forces in cooperation with the federal government are
supporting Puntland security units battling ISIS militants entrenched in the
Cal Miskaat Mountains, as Puntland state nears the conclusion of its military
campaign against the group in the region.
The airstrike marked the 81st U.S. strike in Somalia this
year — surpassing the previous record of 63 strikes carried out in 2019 under
the Trump administration.
The United States has also conducted airstrikes in southern
and central Somalia in support of the federal government’s ongoing fight
against al-Shabaab.
