Kampala (HOL) — Somali Minister of Internal Security, Gen.
Abdullahi Sheikh Ismail Fartaag, met with Uganda’s Minister of Security, Hon.
Jim Katugugu Muhwezi, in Kampala on Tuesday to discuss enhancing bilateral
security cooperation.
The meeting focused on joint efforts in counterterrorism,
intelligence sharing, and capacity-building programs for security forces in
both countries.
Minister Fartaag expressed his gratitude to the Government
of Uganda for its continued support to Somalia, particularly its vital
contribution to the African Union Support and Stabilisation Mission in Somalia
(AUSSOM). He emphasized the importance of deepening collaboration between the
two ministries to promote peace and regional stability.
For his part, Minister Muhwezi commended Somalia’s efforts
to strengthen national security and rebuild its security institutions,
reaffirming Uganda’s commitment to continued cooperation in maintaining
stability across the Horn of Africa.
The meeting came just days after Uganda People’s Defence
Forces (UPDF) troops serving under AUSSOM, in coordination with the Somali
National Armed Forces (SNAF), successfully recaptured Awdheegle town in the
Lower Shabelle region. The joint operation, concluded on Sunday, 5 October
2025, marked a significant milestone in the third phase of Operation Silent
Storm.
According to military sources, the campaign successfully
cleared Awdheegle of Al-Shabaab fighters, dismantling their trenches, tunnels,
and hideouts, as joint forces continue efforts to weaken the group’s presence
in southern Somalia.
