Somali opposition lawmakers accuse speaker of undermining Parliament

Saturday September 6, 2025

Mogadishu (HOL) — Federal lawmakers aligned with opposition groups accused the speaker of Somalia’s lower house on Saturday of violating the Constitution and the Rules of Procedure, saying his leadership has weakened Parliament and subordinated it to the presidency.

In a statement, the MPs criticized Speaker Sheikh Adan Mohamed Nur “Madoobe” for what they called repeated postponements of parliamentary sessions without legal justification. They argued the delays have rendered the House of the People inactive for weeks at a time, undermining its role as an independent branch of government.

“The last two sessions of the House of the People not being able to work for less than a month shows the extent of the decline in the parliamentary process and its role as a representative of the people,” the lawmakers said.

They described the practice as unprecedented in Somalia’s political history, warning that it risks turning Parliament into a subordinate arm of the executive branch.

The MPs pledged to defend the Constitution, safeguard the interests of Somali citizens, and prevent the erosion of legislative authority. They urged fellow lawmakers, the public, and international partners to monitor developments closely and push for the restoration of Parliament’s independence.

Speaker Madoobe and his deputies did not immediately respond to the accusations.
