Kismayo (HOL) – Somali National Army’s elite Danab
commandos, in collaboration with Jubbaland’s Dervish forces, carried out mine
clearance operations on Thursday in the outskirts of Kismayo, the capital of
the Lower Juba region.
Danab officers told reporters that the operation was aimed
at removing mines planted by al-Shabaab militants to protect civilians and
secure key roads.
“This mine clearance operation comes after repeated
incidents in which roadside bombs have targeted vehicles carrying civilians,
causing deaths and injuries,” an official said.
Danab and Jubbaland Dervish forces have recently intensified
joint operations across districts in the Lower Juba region. In recent weeks,
several landmine explosions have struck public and military vehicles, with
local authorities blaming al-Shabaab for the attacks.
