Mogadishu applauds Egypt’s commitment to security, peace, and development

Monday September 22, 2025

Mogadishu (HOL) — The Somali government has welcomed the official statement issued by the Arab Republic of Egypt, reaffirming Cairo’s full solidarity with the Somali people and its continued support for Somalia’s stability, peace, and development.

In a statement on Monday, Somalia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation described Egypt’s position as “a true reflection of the historical, deep, and brotherly relations between the two governments and peoples.”

The ministry emphasized that Egypt’s support plays a vital role in safeguarding Somalia’s independence, strengthening regional peace, combating terrorism, and building state institutions.

“The Federal Republic of Somalia sees this statement as a living embodiment of the deep historical and fraternal links that bind the two countries and their peoples,” the ministry noted.

The Egyptian Foreign Ministry had earlier confirmed plans to deploy troops to Somalia in the coming weeks under the African Union Support and Stabilisation Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM). It also praised the Somali government’s determination to enforce the rule of law, combat terrorism, and deepen strategic ties with Cairo.

The statement comes amid Egypt’s active role in mobilizing international and regional backing for Somalia’s key national priorities, including security, governance, and development.

Earlier this month, a 16-member Egyptian military delegation led by Maj. Gen. Islam Radwan visited Somalia, touring areas in Lower Shabelle and Middle Shabelle where Egyptian troops are expected to be stationed.

On Tuesday, President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud confirmed that Mogadishu is awaiting the arrival of the first Egyptian contingent, which will operate under the AU mandate.
