Somalia launches 2025 business economy survey

Tuesday September 30, 2025

Mogadishu (HOL) — Somalia’s National Bureau of Statistics has launched its annual National Business and Economic Survey, a countrywide effort to collect data critical for development planning, economic policy, and investment.
The bureau said the survey, which began this week, will track business activity across all sectors to provide accurate measures of gross domestic product and inform government strategies. Officials stressed that the results will be used to design and evaluate economic policies, encourage domestic and foreign investment, and guide long-term development.
Director General Dr. Abdisalan Abdirahman Mohamed said the information gathered will reflect the true state of Somalia’s economy and benefit businesses, the government, and the public. “Your participation is crucial to ensuring the accuracy of national economic statistics,” his office said in a statement addressed to businesses nationwide.
Under the 2020 Statistics Law, all private and government-owned businesses are legally required to provide information requested by the bureau. Authorities emphasized that any data collected will remain confidential and will be used solely for statistical purposes.
The bureau called on companies, business centers, and public institutions to cooperate with its data collection teams, which are already in the field. It also urged the Somalia Chamber of Commerce and the Office of the Prime Minister to support the initiative.
Officials described the survey as a vital national undertaking that will help shape Somalia’s economic future and support business growth across the country.
